Treating Insomnia

I have had sleeping problems for more than a few years now.
I just can not fall asleep sometimes.

I have tried so many different treatments, pills, tea variety and exercises.

Here I am sharing some things which work for me.
I am not a doctor, so please, if you have a persistent disorder, consult a physician.
The list here is my opinion and experience only.

In 2014, I started having bursts of energy around 7-8 pm and just felt wired throughout the night.
Some days I would stay up till 4 – 5 am and just daydream in my bed, with no ability to fall asleep.

I saw my family doctor and a specialist.

First, my doctor prescribed me a medication called Ativan. This is benzodiazepines, which act on the brain and nerves (central nervous system) to produce a calming effect. I took 0.5 mg at night, 30 minutes before sleep and it seemed to work for me most of the time. Some days I would go up to 1 – 2 mg and it had no effect whatsoever. The side effect I had was in the mornings when I had to wake up around 7 am, I had such horrible drowsiness, I would need so much coffee to just come to my senses.

The second option is L-Theanine. This is a natural supplement for stress relief and it has a very calming effect. You can go up to 1200 mg a day (FDA maximum dose) but the pills come in 100 – 225 mg. This is a green tea extract. The one I buy from the health food store is 225 mg Organika brand and it is not expensive. This has been a miracle supplement for me, not only to have a better sleep at night but also throughout the day, it helps me stay focused, it calms my mind and also has a very soothing effect. I have been taking L-theanine for more than six months now and I just love it.

I received the This Works pillow spray in December of my FabFitFun box and wow, what an amazing product this is. I have been using it for three weeks now and it has been helping me sleep better and feel refreshed. It is created with some natural essential oils and the aroma is so nice, you just sink into a deep sleep. You can order it online from Amazon or through their website and you just spray on your pillow before sleep. I did not notice any acne or any other problems with this product since I have been using it. It is recommended to change your pillowcase every 3 days (but I change it every 10 days).

Chamomile tea is also a great aid to relax.
It is not recommended in high doses but sometimes I use it as an add-on for very stressful days. It does help calm my mind and it just tastes great.

And of course, exercises. I used to do very intense workouts last year. I did T25, Insanity and a lot of running but right now I am in love with Bikram (hot yoga). It has a major effect on your well-being, yoga is life-changing. If you do not exercise, try adding some stretching exercises to your daily routine, start slowly and gradually increase, from 10-minute sessions to 45 minutes a day. You can find a lot of free exercises on YouTube or even sign up for a class in your town.

Another great supplement is Melatonin. I take 0.3 mg in a candy form that I have to put under my tongue and it takes really around 5 minutes to put me to sleep. I also have 5 mg fast dissolve pills but I keep that as a last resort. So really melatonin is a great natural supplement.

The last tip is to go to bed at the same time every day. Routine is very important for your wellbeing.
